“State of the Heart reminds us of what is best about South Carolina and her many gifted writers, the monumental power of this place to shape our memories into stories and then our stories into art.”―Pat Conroy, from the foreword to volume 1
The three-volume anthology State of the Heart: South Carolina Writers on the Place They Love shares the place-based remembrances and lessons of more than 100 contemporary writers from the Palmetto State, representing many genres and experiences. These essays are ultimately about people’s connections to one another, to a complex, common past, and to ongoing efforts to build a future of promise and possibility.
On Sunday, November 3, from 4:30-6:00 p.m., the fourth annual Pat Conroy Literary Festival will host a panel discussion with State of the Heart editor Aïda Rogers and five of the project’s contributing writers: Margaret Evans, J. Drew Lanham, John Lane, Mary Alice Monroe, and Jon Pineda. Free and open to the public, this event will be held at and in partnership with Lowcountry Presbyterian Church in Bluffton, SC. A book signing will follow the discussion.
Photos as well as short bios of all festival presenters are on the Presenter Page.
